The Iron Phoenix When the Ukrainian military began Project Moroz, they were not attempting to create a fire-powered symbol of rebirth. They were attempting to create a weapon capable of surviving the next Death Knell, a power of the The Final Hammer, a Kazekhstanian Quasar villain who was terrorizing the country. Researchers studying residual energy signatures left behind by the Death Knell discovered a peculiar phenomenon. Certain individuals possessed genetic markers allowing their bodies to absorb and stabilize exotic thermodynamic energies. Aleksandr Pelagiya's profile was the most promising candidate they had ever found. The experiment went catastrophically right. Rather than generating heat, Aleksandr became a living sink for it. His body absorbed thermal energy from the environment, freezing steel with a touch and reducing raging infernos to harmless embers. His skin transformed into a metallic silver-blue substance stronger than armor plate. His blood became a cryogenic fluid that circulated through his body like liquid nitrogen. Most astonishing of all, whenever he suffered fatal injuries, his body entered a cocoon-like state of crystalline ice and metal. Hours later, a new form emerged from the frozen shell. The scientists called the phenomenon Cryogenic Reconstitution. The public called him the Iron Phoenix. Protector of Ukraine The Iron Phoenix became the centerpiece of Team Proknovsk. Where Copper Phoenix had been a symbol of passion and inspiration, Iron Phoenix became a symbol of endurance. Villages devastated by winter storms saw him carve roads through blizzards. Floodwaters froze into temporary bridges beneath fleeing civilians. Forest fires vanished beneath waves of supernatural frost. During battles against the Death Knell's servants, Aleksandr often stood motionless at the front lines, allowing enemy attacks to shatter his metallic body before reforming moments later from sheets of ice. People began telling stories. Some claimed he never slept. Others claimed he had forgotten how to smile. Children said they had seen him walking alone through snowstorms, leaving trails of frozen blue fire in his wake. Aleksandr made no effort to deny any of it. Every year that passed seemed to make him colder. The Wave and the Bear His relationship with the Guardians unfolded differently as well. Volna's hydrokinesis combined naturally with Aleksandr's cryokinetic abilities. Together they could freeze entire rivers, create walls of living ice, and halt disasters that neither could have stopped alone. Aliana found Aleksandr fascinating. Beneath the cold exterior she saw a man carrying immense guilt over his father's death and his failure to protect Ukraine during its darkest hour. Anton Vampushnyy saw something different. He saw a rival. The Bear and the Iron Phoenix could not have been more different. Arsus was passionate, emotional, and fiercely protective. Aleksandr was stoic, disciplined, and increasingly detached from ordinary human concerns. Their rivalry became legendary among European Quasars. It escalated from insults to training duels and eventually to outright brawls during joint operations. The media dubbed them: The Ice King and the Bear. Volna hated the nickname. The public loved it. The Q-Games Disaster The 2022 Q-Games changed everything. When Gothmog attacked Chicago, Iron Phoenix found himself facing the one enemy perfectly designed to counter him. The villain's heat output reached impossible levels. Entire sections of the stadium melted. Steel ran like water. Thousands fled in panic. While other heroes evacuated civilians, Aleksandr engaged Gothmog directly. For nearly a minute the two became the center of a war between absolute heat and absolute cold. Witnesses later described seeing a sphere of steam kilometers wide hanging over the city. Iron Phoenix absorbed enough thermal energy to extinguish volcanic eruptions. His metallic body glowed white-hot. The cryogenic fluid in his veins boiled away. Still he continued fighting. inally, Gothmog unleashed a blast powerful enough to vaporize him entirely. Aleksandr died. Then he died again. And again. Three times his body reformed from frozen crystal only to be destroyed by Gothmog's flames. Each resurrection came faster than the last. Each resurrection left him less human. By the time the battle ended, hundreds were dead, including Team Liberty, the Shen, and members of the Devas. Aleksandr emerged from the ruins looking more like a living statue than a man. His eyes glowed with pale blue light. His voice sounded distant and metallic. Something fundamental had changed. The Frozen Guardian After the attack, AEGIS ordered the remnants of Team Proknovsk to integrate with the Guardians. Aleksandr refused. Partly because of Arsus. Partly because of Volna. Mostly because he no longer trusted himself. The repeated deaths during the Gothmog battle had accelerated his transformation. Medical examinations revealed that less than twenty percent of his original biological tissue remained. His body was gradually replacing itself with an unknown metallic-crystalline substance. Doctors feared that one day there would be nothing human left. Aleksandr secretly feared the same thing. Team Icarus When Director Elaine Battle approached him about joining Team Icarus, she expected resistance. Instead, Aleksandr accepted immediately. The truth was simple. Ukraine reminded him of everything he had lost. Every street held memories of his father. Every mission brought him closer to Volna. Every encounter with Arsus reignited old hatred. America offered distance. A fresh start. A chance to become something more than a weapon forged from grief. On Team Icarus, Iron Phoenix became the team's immovable shield. While Slipstream controlled the skies and Ravenstar manipulated light and darkness, Iron Phoenix stood at the center of every battle like a walking glacier. His teammates often joked that he was incapable of emotion. Only a few noticed the truth. Every year his powers grew stronger. Every year his humanity grew weaker. And somewhere deep beneath Antarctica, ancient sensors left behind by the Ancients began detecting energy signatures matching his own. Signatures that predated humanity. Signatures that suggested Iron Phoenix was no longer simply a Quasar. He was evolving into something else. Something immortal. Something cold enough to freeze the world. When Team Icarus defeated the Daedalus Six, Iron Phoenix was obviously one of those who survived. Many members of Team Icarus dead, the US Government wanted to claim him and force him into service for their ongoing fight. Aleksandr chose not to cooperate. It quickly escalated into dozens of US deaths and a declaration by the US government that Iron Phoenix was a wanted criminal. Black Dawn Prime-X approached Aleksandr, providing him a chance to get what he wanted. Prime-X promised him a chance to claim Volna as his own. Prime-X made it one of Black Dawn's priorities, the capture of Volna. Aleksandr saw his chance at humanity once again, but in the ensuring fight to kidnap Volna, he destroyed Ursus and Volna was heartbroken. In captivity, Volna refused every consolation or reconciliation Aleksandr offered. He convinced Syren to alter her feelings for him, but even Syren's powers could not completely destroy the memories of her hatred for Iron Phoenix. One day, Volna cursed Aleksandr, telling him that if the world froze tomorrow she would turn away from him even if he were a blazing fire. Iron Phoenix grew furious -- not raging furious, but coldly furious. Volna froze where she stood, and Aleksandr kissed her as he used his strength to shatter her. Since then, Iron Phoenix has been a loyal devotee to Prime-X and the Black Dawn. The Black Dawn is the end of all things -- and for Iron Phoenix, all things end in cold and ice. |

When Aleksandr Pelagiya was ten years old, he decided he wanted to be Pilot, the world's first superhero. Pilot had rescued Aleksandr’s home town of Drova from a band of mercenaries when the collapsing Party refused to send help, choosing to keep their soldiers in Russia for an impending political standoff. Pilot showed up, sheltering everyone with a force shield as he tossed the mercenary’s heavily armed trucks aside and pummeling mercenaries until they surrendered to the forces that included his father and uncle. In the ensuring years, his father praised the Zaschitniki, aka the Guardians, as the heroes of the Russian and Ukrainian peoples. A few short years later, however, he changed his opinion when the Russians chose to keep their precious Guardians at home when the Ukraine faced hardship and disaster from the Pogrebalnyy Zvon, known in English as the Death Knell. Pilot was no longer around, being imprisoned for crimes against the American government. The Ukraine had no one, and so it suffered. Aleksandr's father, attempting to stave off disaster, died trying to rescue some people from an attack by the Death Knell. Aleksandr felt horrible guilt, having been away serving in the military. When Aleksandr heard of a program being started by the Ukrainian military looking for volunteers for a dangerous experiment, he volunteered. He had an exemplary record and he had what they referred to as a "compatible gene profile" for their project. In less than a year from the death of his father, Aleksandr had become a Quasar with fire powers and the ability to rise from total destruction. As the Copper Phoenix, he joined Team Proknovst, named for the general who sponsored the program. Along with Old Guard, Deadly Owl, and Gamma Fist, they become righteous protectors of the Ukraine and its neighbors. Copper Phoenix had more than a few encounters with the Guardians, and in spite of his disdain for them, he fell in love with Aliana Lanina, also known as Volna, the Wave. The scientist Anton Vampushnyy, also known as Arsus, the Bear, however, did not appreciate your attentions toward his team mate. You have had a bitter rivalry since then – and even after he suffered a setback and became trapped in the form of the Bear following the Q-Games attack, he has had the attention of Aliana and you hate him. After the events of the 2022 Q-Games when Gothmog, a Lambda level fire-spewing villain attacked the stadium, Copper Phoenix stood toe-to-toe with the villain for long, agonizing seconds -- resisting his blasts and striking him as he could, in spite of Gothmog's immunity to fire. When Copper Phoenix reformed after the battle, he heard the death toll of attack was in the hundreds, many of those Quasars. Two of his team, the Deadly Owl and Gamma Fist, perished in the attack. Team Proknovsk was little more than a partnership now -- and when AEGIS mandated that the remainder of Team Proknovsk team up with the Guardians, Aleksandr refused. He knew he could not fight alongside his most bitter rival and the women he loved. AEGIS Director Elaine Battle approached with an opportunity, a new team being created in the United States, a team to take the place of the fallen Team USA and the ostracized Team Daedalus. They would be called Team Icarus. He jumped at the opportunity to continue to serve as a hero, even if it was not for his beloved Ukraine. |
